Coupling fluid facilitates the transmission of ultrasonic waves from a transducer into a test sample. A couplant is required because the acoustic impedance mismatch between air and solids. Without couplant nearly all of the energy is reflected and little is transmitted into the test material. The couplant displaces the air and allowing sound energy into the test specimen so that a usable ultrasonic signal can be obtained.
