Are there different models of the PosiTector PC to choose from?
No. There is 1 model consisting of an Advanced gage body and probe (ordering code: PC3-E). You can purchase the probe separately (ordering code: PRBPC) for use with Advanced gage bodies with serial numbers greater than 700,000 (manufactured after April 2011).
Can I purchase a new PosiTector PC probe for my existing PosiTector Advanced gage body?
Yes. PosiTector Advanced gage bodies manufactured after April 2011 with serial numbers greater than 700,000 support the NEW PosiTector PC probe. Simply update your existing PosiTector by following step by step instructions online. The PosiTector PC probe will NOT work on Standard gage bodies.
Can I use my previous generation PosiTector PC probe on my new model PosiTector gage body?
Yes. A quick reset will allow the PC probe to communicate with all new gage bodies. Once reset, however, the PC probe will be unable to communicate with the previous generation gage body unless both are returned for service.
Can I connect other probes?
Yes. The PosiTector PC accepts all PosiTector probes easily converting from measuring uncured powder to cured dry film thickness, surface profile, and more.
Does the PosiTector PC conform to existing standards and test methods?
Yes. The PosiTector PC complies with ASTM D7378, “Standard Practice for Measurement of Thickness of Applied Coating Powders to Predict Cured Thickness”.
Why measure uncured powder?
Coatings must be applied within certain minimum and maximum dry film thickness specifications. But waiting to measure coating thickness after curing can result in product waste and production delays. Accurate measurement at the time of application:
-Eliminates over usage
-Improves quality
-Controls set-up
-Reduces waste
-Saves money!
Can I purchase a complete solution for measuring powder coating before and after cure?
Yes. PosiTector Powder Inspection Kits are available. Each kit contains a PosiTector Advanced gage body, PosiTector PC uncured powder thickness probe, user-selected PosiTector 6000 coating thickness probe and 2 Powder Combs.
How does the PosiTector PC work?
The probe uses ultrasound to non-destructively analyze applied powder in seconds. Information passes between the probe and the gage body via a fast Bluetooth wireless connection.
Are there alternative ways to measure uncured powder?
Yes. Handy, inexpensive powder combs are available. Coating powders diminish in thickness during the curing process, so measuring powder height in the pre-cured, pre-gelled state requires a correlation factor be calculated and applied to every measurement for every powder. Two popular Powder Comb models are included with each PosiTector Powder Inspection Kit.
Can I measure cured powder thickness with the PosiTector post cure?
Yes. Simply connect a PosiTector 6000 dry film thickness probe to measure the cured powder coating thickness.
Does the PosiTector PC imprint or dimple the powder?
No contact is made during measurement and there are no cables to accidentally brush and disturb the powder.
How far away can the wireless probe be from the gage body to measure remotely?
The wireless probe has a range of 10m (30 ft.).
Do I have to hold the probe steady during measurement?
No. In fact, the instrument performs best when there is slight movement. It was designed to measure moving parts on hooks.
When measuring, the result on the probe and gage body occasionally changes by several digits after I remove my finger from the probe. Is this OK?
Yes, this is normal operation. There is a queue of samples that are still being processed after the button is released.
What types of batteries are used?
The wireless probe uses 3 “AA” alkaline batteries. The gage body uses 3 “AAA” alkaline batteries. Battery icons display a full bar with fresh alkaline batteries installed. As the batteries weaken, the bar will be reduced. When the battery icon is low, the instrument can still be used, but the batteries should be changed at the earliest opportunity.
Do your instruments require any formal training for use? Do you offer ‘demo’ models?
No. Our instruments are designed for simple operation, feature easy-to-use menus, both full and quick instruction manuals, and helpful videos. In lieu of demonstration models, we provide unlimited technical support via telephone and/or email, and a limited 30-day money back guarantee.
Does the PosiTector PC Powder Checker include a traceable certificate of calibration?
Although the PosiTector PC Powder Checker arrives fully tested and ready to measure, it does not include a traceable Certificate of Calibration. This is due to the fact that Certified Calibration Standards for this type of predictive instrument do not exist.
A PosiTector PC Powder Checker operator can confirm gage accuracy by comparing the gage’s pre-cure measurement results with those of a certified/traceable dry-film thickness instrument after the powder has been cured.
